My mom, in one of her comments on my blog, reminded me about how when I was a kid I hated the books she read. I'd get off the bus, tromp up our interminable driveway, walk in the door and find her sitting there reading what I called "philosophy." At the time I imagined that she must have been sitting there all day long. Now that I'm a mom I realize she'd probably just sat down there about 37 seconds before I walked in the door. After hello (I'd like to THINK it was after hello) I'd say, "Are you reading PHILOSOPHY again?" I wish I knew why I hated it so much. I think it was because things seemed so crystal clear to me at that age... and the things that were mysterious were sort of magically so... certainly not worth READING about... not when books like Anne of Green Gables awaited.
Anyway, she pointed out how now she reads philosophy on MY blog!! HA! I never thought about all this stuff I write as philosophy. Eight year old Day is FREAKING out.
So... in honor of eight year old day, I'm not going to write about philosophy today...
I'm going to write about what I'm going to do tomorrow. Part of me feels like I'm waiting for a birthday party to come... the sort of party with cake with ooey-gooey frosting that my Mom never serves at home... the sort where they might even let us (gasp!) watch television! The other part of me feels like I'm waiting to go see Dr. Hilton, my pediatrician, and he's going to give me a shot in my arm.
Tomorrow, I am making a hat! The grown-up Day saw these directions and printed them out and I told her, "SURE! We can do that!" She doubted me for about 36 hours and then went right out to the fabric store to see if there was anything worth putting on my head.
She's a bit practical sometimes, so she started out and got the stuff to make an all white hat. That will look good after I get some flowers and beads and stuff and dress it up some. I think she said something about using the white one to learn on.
And then... she found... this stuff. She's going to make the outside of the hat brown and the inside and the underside of the brim the blue color! Won't I look like a fashion designer in that one?
I'll let you know how grown-up Day does with following the directions. I'll get her to take pictures as she goes so you can appreciate your favorite hat AND your normal sized head.
You just wait, Day Anna Pritchett Leary--when you get to Texas, I'm going to have made a cake with so much ooey gooey icing that you'll see it from the driveway....AND I'll have a big screen TV and we'll watch it nonstop, to make up for lost time. Ha! And maybe, just maybe, you'll sit down and watch The Waltons with me for a Waltons marathon.
ReplyDeleteBetter thee than me! Good luck on this little project, though I do not think that luck is required. You will be the envy of all you meet and this will be your new career-Amazing Designer of Awesome Hats! Yes, I think that would work nicely.
